They Bring Music to Our Ears

June 13, 2005

You'll sit in the wings of every opera concert. When Bruce Springsteen comes to town, you can call him by his first name. You'll preview Hollywood blockbusters weeks before the general public ever does. When Quincy Jones goes into the studio, you'll be right there with him. As a sound technician, you'll have front row seats to just about any major event.

The Perks and Lifestyle of the Sound Technician

Regardless of the venue, sound engineers usually have it pretty good. They don't always work with rock musicians, per se, but they have access to a wide range of opportunities. As a sound engineer, you can hear amazing lectures at the local school for free. You can watch all kinds of concerts, movies, and shows for nothing. There's a black tie dinner with a bunch of socialites; you're the "go-to" person for any speech. It's extremely interesting and varied work. And yes, in some cases, you will get to meet the stars. Even after 50 years in the biz, James Brown still needs a microphone check before every gig.

Sound Engineer School

Because sound engineering is no cakewalk, you'll definitely need to head to school first to learn the ropes. Have you ever seen those switchboards and control panels they use? Goodness. You can't walk in to your first gig asking what this button does or what that button does. Sound engineer school is basically a requirement unless you already have extensive experience as an audio technician. This is especially true given recent advances in digital technology.

Saying Thanks: What a Sound Idea

The next time you're at a rock concert, be sure to walk up to the sound engineer and say, "Hey thanks buddy. The acoustics are great." After all, without a sound engineer or technician, the stadium full of screaming fans would have to cup their ears and crane their necks to hear the band.
